Yes, the Gym project is mostly funded, as you may have read before - but it's not completely funded. We still require $250,000 to meet our plan. So far we've raised approximately $20,000 towards that goal, and we have more to do. The gym is built only once, so we want to make certain it includes all the necessary features for our community for many years to come.

If you have a visit from one of our canvassers (easily recognizable by their badge, similar to the image above), please consider giving them a donation. They're tax free and you'll see benefits to the community as soon as it opens next year. As well donators will be recognized by a permanent display inside the gym. If you own a business, please consider making a donation in its name. 

Finally, we're seeking addiitonal canvassers who believe in the community and want to make a difference. If you have time and interest, please contact LWCC President Nazir Ahmed at 489-1780.

The posters have not been taken down yet and are still on the walls of the Community Centre building at 414 Lindenwood Drive West for public viewing. If you're wondering what the site will look like, or what's going to be inside the building, feel free to drop by and take a look.

Registrations are restricted to 25 per week and are on a first come basis.

Proved so popular when we premiered it last year we are bringing it back –- solar/wind power, hydrogen rockets, earth awareness and more.

Camp B (Rocket Science) dates : July 19-23
This is our original camp that made Mad Science summers so much fun.

]]>President's Comments: New Gymnasium Capital Fund Campaignhttp://lindenwoods.cc/news/2010/5/3/presidents-comments-new-gymnasium-capital-fund-campaign.htmlWebmaster2010-05-03T11:00:27Zexpansion facility presidentThe March 5th, 2010 funding announcement for the expansion of Linden Wood Community Centre (LWCC) was the culmination of nine months hard work by the board. The announcement is welcome news as well as a challenge. It is welcome, as it will enable LWCC to proceed with its long overdue expansion plans and a challenge, as the community must raise its part of the capital contribution by June 30, 2010.
 
The original proposal consisted of an addition of 16,000 sq. ft. at an estimated cost of $3.6 million. Of this amount, $3.1 million was to come from the government grants and the balance of $500,000 from contribution by LWCC.  The amount of the grant announced by three levels of government is $2.5 million, thus representing a shortfall of $600,000. This shortfall is being met by reduction in the scope of the project. 
 
The proposed addition was modest in scope to begin with and represented a bare minimum to meet an identifiable need. The reduction in scope due to shortfall in capital grant will definitely reduce the effectiveness of the project in meeting the community need.  Any further reduction in scope due to escalation in construction cost or other contingencies will certainly compromise the integrity of the project. In order to avoid the likelihood of this happening, it is incumbent upon us as a community to raise sufficient funds to meet our commitment.
 
Of the $500,000 committed by LWCC, $250,000 is on hand at this time and the balance of $250,000 is to be raised by June 30. The Capital Campaign Committee of LWCC is preparing plans for the campaign. Although the details of the campaign will be announced soon, the main thrust of the campaign will be as follows:
 
  • Individual Households:  Expanded facility will be a valuable asset in the community and will directly benefit the residents of the area.  Consequently individual households are considered to be the main source for fund raising.  Although donations of any amount are welcome, we are asking each household to consider donating $100 each.  Our thanks to those of you who are already responding to this appeal, and have made your donation using the donation form published in special edition of Linden Words of March 2010.  It is our hope that all residents will make their contribution in this manner.  The donation form is published in April issue and will be repeated in May issue of the Linden Words.
  • Business and Corporate sector. Lidenwoods and area have a thriving business and corporate sector that provides valuable service and makes many other contributions to enhance the quality of life.  Despite this, when it comes to an undertaking of a major project like the one being undertaken by LWCC, it is always difficult if not impossible to contemplate such a project without the financial help from the business and corporate sector.  So we are appealing to you to please consider making a donation to ensure that the integrity of the project is not further compromised by reducing the scope.  Although donations of any amounts are welcome, various levels of suggested amounts for special recognition are $100, $500, $1000, $3000 and $5000.  Please use the suggested form published in the March and April issue and repeated here in this issue of the Linden Words to make your donation.
 
All contributors of $20 or more will receive a charity receipt for tax purposes.  Contributors of  $100 or more will be recognized permanently by displaying a plaque on the “Honor Wall” to be incorporated as a part of the addition. For display purposes, the donations will be appropriately categorized to signify the amount of the donation.

]]>LWCC President's Commentshttp://lindenwoods.cc/news/2010/4/9/lwcc-presidents-comments.htmlWebmaster2010-04-10T01:04:16Zannual events facility news programs reportThe annual General Meeting of the Linden Woods Community Centre was held on March 28, 2010.  The purpose of the meeting was to receive and accept various reports, to fill vacancies on the board and to transact such other business as might properly had come before the meeting.  Unfortunately attendance at the meeting was poor and the business  was limited to receiving of reports only.
 
In an attempt to make as many people as possible aware of what is happening at the community center, following is an abstract from various programming reports.
 
Mini Soccer, Youth Soccer, Basketball and Hockey remain popular with the young and had high participation rate. Mini soccer had the most participants with 397 children ages 4 to 8 years playing mini soccer.  Indoors and outdoors youth soccer combined attracted players in similar numbers Registration for basketball was 154 and 146 players for spring and fall season respectively. Due to lack of on site facilities, these programs were run off site. and in some cases outside of our own community.  
 
The volunteer board members with assistance from many others administer, manage and organize these programs.
 
Other programs aimed at youth and children included Tennis, Karate, Kickboxing, TaeKwonDo and Mad Science Camp.  A new program called Musikgarten for preschoolers was started during the year.  
 
Adult Programming included Aerobics, Aerobics Boot Camp, Yoga, Dance, Karate and Kickboxing. Two new programs, Pilate and Kung Fu were introduced during the year. 
 
These programs are run at the community center and are conducted by individual leaders in conjunction with the community centre.  
 
Bridge Club and Dining Out group for seniors were active as in the past. Hockey practices and pleasure skating became possible again after closure of rinks the previous year due to water pipe break.  Despite an unusually wet summer and some drainage issues, the Spray Park was busy.
 
Despite lack of facilities, it is fair to say that the community center was busy.  Thank you to the community in general and to the board members and other volunteers in particular who made this all happen.

]]>Our Gymnasium is Coming!http://lindenwoods.cc/news/2010/3/16/our-gymnasium-is-coming.htmlWebmaster2010-03-16T21:22:36ZAt long last, after many years of effort by many volunteers, our Community Centre has finally been granted approval and funding to construct a full-size gymnasium on our property. With incredible last minute assistance from the Federal Government and the City of Winnipeg, we’ve managed to secure the bulk of the finances required to construct the new facility. Between the two levels of government and a contribution from the Province, some $2.521M has been allocated to our project.
 
The new gymnasium will be generously featured and include not only a full-size sports area, but also a stage on which will appear many events in future years. You can read more about the project at a new website specially made to keep you up to date on the latest construction information. 
 
While we’ve acquired the majority of the funds required to complete the job, there is an amount left that we must raise ourselves. Over the past few years the community centre has been able to raise $250,000 through various programs, but we still need approximately $350,000 to complete the project. Our fundraising program will be announced very soon, and you may find details at the new gym project website. 
 
Thanks to all who have worked on this project over the past 10+ years! The big work is yet to come.
